Story line is as follows: In World War II Casablanca, Rick Blaine, exiled American and former freedom fighter, runs the most popular nightspot in town. The cynical lone wolf Blaine comes into the possession of two valuable letters of transit. When Nazi Major Strasser arrives in Casablanca, the sycophantic police Captain Renault does what he can to please him, including detaining a Czechoslovak underground leader Victor Laszlo. Much to Rick's surprise, Lazslo arrives with Ilsa, Rick's one time love. Rick is very bitter towards Ilsa, who ran out on him in Paris, but when he learns she had good reason to, they plan to run off together again using the letters of transit. Well, that was their original plan.... |

| Notes : Universally acclaimed as one of the greatest and most romantic films ever made, Casablanca has truly withstood the test of time. The film, set during WWII in the French Moroccan locale of Casablanca, depicts the tale of numerous European refugees all vying to escape persecution by the Nazis and live with hope in America. All except the mysterious Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) who, for untold reasons, refuses to return to America but instead, sets up shop as a 'saloon keeper.' Amidst the gambling, with lives as well as money, Rick awaits his destiny - in the form of an old flame portrayed by Ingrid Bergman. The script by Howard Koch and the Epstein Brothers won an Oscar as did Hal Wallis for Best Picture and Michael Curtiz for Best Director. Bogart was rewarded with his first Oscar nomination as was Claude Rains as Louie Renault, the Prefect of Police. The film has numerous memorable lines that are quoted to this day and the timeless romance has kept it as one of the greatest films of all time. |
