| Notes : VERTIGO (1958) - Art by SAUL BASS, Original US One Sheet. James Stewart stars in one of Alfred Hitchcock's best pictures as a detective who falls in love with a woman he's hired to follow. When she turns up dead, his obsession with her makes him change another woman into her image. Imagine his surprise when it turns out that she's the same woman. Magnificent Saul Bass art graces this very cool one sheet.
Much has been made of the deceptively intricate styling of the work of poster artist Saul Bass for one of Hitchcock's best. The genius begins with the selection of the 'nervous font' Bass uses in the top credits, simply calling the film 'Alfred Hitchcock's Masterpiece.' But the cleverest part of the poster is the uneven plane the central characters find themselves swept into as they spiral into a vortex that spreads across 3/5ths of the poster. The man in black is harming/helping, depending on your mood. The woman is in a police-styled drawn outline, with a pool of blood between them. So engaging is the design one noted director said that, for him, the film began when he first saw the poster. |
