Directed by CLAUDE LELOUCH.
A man and a woman meet by accident on a Sunday evening at their childrens' boarding school. Slowly they reveal themselves to each other, finding that each is a widow/widower. Each is slow to reveal anything personal so that each revelation is hidden by a misperception. They become friends, then close friends, and then she reveals that she can't have a lover because, for her, her husband's memory is still too strong. Much of the film is told wordlessly in action, or through hearing one of their thoughts as they go about their day.

| Notes : Blessed with the gift of identifying the one image which symbolised the movie, SAUL BASS then recreated it in a strikingly modern style. Complex story about a San Francisco detective and his psychological troubles with fear of heights and obsession over a woman.
The graphic designer was Saul Bass. Saul Bass is probably the most famous name in the graphic arts industry. He worked on some sixty movie titles and posters as well as many instantly-recognizable corporate logos.
Saul Bass liked to use stark designs, spirals and favored black, white and red. The poster for Vertigo is a typical example of his movie poster work. Alfred Hitchcock employed him for posters promoting Vertigo, North by Northwest and Psycho. The film Vertigo was about two people behaving in two different ways in the two halves of the movie. This duality gave Saul Bass the context. He was asked to design a poster to entice an audience.
Plainly speaking, the poster is of a man and a woman spiraling into the eye of a vortex. The spiral is white. The man is solid black. The woman is outlined, like the police do. The lettering is the solid black Hitchcock font. The stars of the film are James Stewart and Kim Novak. Their names and Hitchcock's are written above the spiral. The name of the film is in bold at the bottom left below the spiral. Extra credits are written small below the title. |

James Stewart's arresting portrayal of retired private detective Scottie Ferguson keeps audiences on the edge of their seats in this fine Alfred Hitchcock thriller. Scottie, who is plagued with acrophobia, is asked by old friend Gavin Elster (Tom Helmore) to follow his wife, Madeleine (Kim Novak). A graphic design stand out, you get the best of both worlds as this insert is complete with iconic Saul Bass artwork and a passionate portrait of the two stars. |

| Notes : This film is often heralded as one of director Alfred hitchcock's finest. the unique artwork for this poster is the work of the late Saul Bass who was the premier graphic designer of his time, best known for his work with directors Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, and Otto Preminger. It might be a long time before you will find a better copy of this scarce format ! |

| Notes : VERTIGO (1958) - Art by SAUL BASS, Original US One Sheet. James Stewart stars in one of Alfred Hitchcock's best pictures as a detective who falls in love with a woman he's hired to follow. When she turns up dead, his obsession with her makes him change another woman into her image. Imagine his surprise when it turns out that she's the same woman. Magnificent Saul Bass art graces this very cool one sheet.
Much has been made of the deceptively intricate styling of the work of poster artist Saul Bass for one of Hitchcock's best. The genius begins with the selection of the 'nervous font' Bass uses in the top credits, simply calling the film 'Alfred Hitchcock's Masterpiece.' But the cleverest part of the poster is the uneven plane the central characters find themselves swept into as they spiral into a vortex that spreads across 3/5ths of the poster. The man in black is harming/helping, depending on your mood. The woman is in a police-styled drawn outline, with a pool of blood between them. So engaging is the design one noted director said that, for him, the film began when he first saw the poster. |
