This is Cary Grant and Grace Kelly's first and only pairing on the screen, and the sparks certainly fly. This exquisite poster with Ercole Brini artwork is from the 1964 re-release of the film. TO CATCH A THIEF was first released in Italy at the Venice Film Festival in September 1955. When a reformed jewel thief is suspected of returning to his former occupation, he must ferret out the real thief in order to prove his innocence. |

 |
 |
| Notes : TRIVIA: Carrie Fisher complained about her costumes in the previous two movies. She said they were so long, you could not tell 'she was a woman'. Those complaints led to the skimpy outfit she wore as Jabba's prisoner. The costume became something of a running joke among the crew, because the metal framework that held the top together meant that the costume didn't move well with her. Since Fisher didn't like the industry standard solution of using double-sided tape, it became necessary before each take to have a wardrobe person check to ensure that her breasts were still snug inside the costume top (and several scenes had to be re-shot when 'wardrobe malfunctions' occurred).

 |
| Notes : Art by SAUL BASS, Directed by Otto Preminger. The movie’s theme was the struggle of its hero - a jazz musician played by Frank Sinatra - to overcome his heroin addiction. Designed by the graphic designer Saul Bass the titles featured an animated black paper-cut-out of a heroin addict’s arm. Knowing that the arm was a powerful image of addiction, Bass had chosen it – rather than Frank Sinatra’s famous face - as the symbol of both the movie’s titles and its promotional poster.

| Notes : Jacques Tati's Monsieur Hulot returns in this classic French farce MON ONCLE. Like Mister Hulot's Holiday (1953), this film - about the unemployed Hulot, who spends his days waiting to escort his nephew from school to his parent's home and, at the same time, trying to find his place in a world that increasingly confounds him - is largely dialogue free, relying on Tati's masterful performance to carry the, at times, very subtle comedy. This is a lovely country-of-origin French affiche. Original material from Tati's films is hard to come by. |

 |
| Notes : Blessed with the gift of identifying the one image which symbolised the movie, SAUL BASS then recreated it in a strikingly modern style. Complex story about a San Francisco detective and his psychological troubles with fear of heights and obsession over a woman.
The graphic designer was Saul Bass. Saul Bass is probably the most famous name in the graphic arts industry. He worked on some sixty movie titles and posters as well as many instantly-recognizable corporate logos.
Saul Bass liked to use stark designs, spirals and favored black, white and red. The poster for Vertigo is a typical example of his movie poster work. Alfred Hitchcock employed him for posters promoting Vertigo, North by Northwest and Psycho. The film Vertigo was about two people behaving in two different ways in the two halves of the movie. This duality gave Saul Bass the context. He was asked to design a poster to entice an audience.
Plainly speaking, the poster is of a man and a woman spiraling into the eye of a vortex. The spiral is white. The man is solid black. The woman is outlined, like the police do. The lettering is the solid black Hitchcock font. The stars of the film are James Stewart and Kim Novak. Their names and Hitchcock's are written above the spiral. The name of the film is in bold at the bottom left below the spiral. Extra credits are written small below the title. |

After the success of Bond's first outing, the excellent Dr. No, the producers of the brand-spankin' new franchise knew they had to up the stakes considerably. And up the stakes they did. From Russia with Love featured more cool gadgets, more vile villains, more heart-pounding action, more beautiful women... In short, more of all the things that make Bond, Bond. This Cold War thriller really played up the conflict between the U.S. and Russia that was on everyone's mind at the time, following the Cuban Missile Crisis. This fabulous poster, which many consider to be superior to any of the American paper, boasts graphics by French poster artist Boris Grinnson. |

| Notes : Directed by Stanley KUBRICK. U.S. Air Force General Jack Ripper goes completely and utterly mad, and sends his bomber wing to destroy the U.S.S.R. He suspects that the communists are conspiring to pollute the 'precious bodily fluids' of the American people. The U.S. president meets with his advisors, where the Soviet ambassador tells him that if the U.S.S.R. is hit by nuclear weapons, it will trigger a 'Doomsday Machine' which will destroy all plant and animal life on Earth. Peter Sellers portrays the three men who might avert this tragedy: British Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, the only person with access to the demented Gen. Ripper; U.S. President Merkin Muffley, whose best attempts to divert disaster depend on placating a drunken Soviet Premier and the former Nazi genius Dr. Strangelove, who concludes that 'such a device would not be a practical deterrent for reasons which at this moment must be all too obvious'. Will the bombers be stopped in time, or will General Jack Ripper succeed in destroying the world ? |

| Notes : Great Elvis image. Can be linen-backed for extra Ł250, please specify. Trivia: For reasons unknown, several of Elvis' songs are slightly sped up, making his voice sound higher than usual. This is most noticable on the title track. This error appears to have originated in the recording studio, as the RCA soundtrack album retains the sped up versions of the songs. A recording of 'Girl Happy', mastered at the proper speed, would not be released until the 1990s.

| Notes : A Man and a Woman was France's definitive love story for a decade, the Love Story of its generation, and a thoroughly French example of its take on romance. Upon its release, it won the 20th Anniversary Grand Prize at Cannes. It won two Oscars, including Best Foreign Film. This lovely French Grande -- the ultra-rare color version. The poster has been linen-backed. A man and a woman meet by accident on a Sunday evening at their childrens' boarding school. Slowly they reveal themselves to each other, finding that each is a widow/widower. Each is slow to reveal anything personal so that each revelation is hidden by a misperception. They become friends, then close friends, and then she reveals that she can't have a lover because, for her, her husband's memory is still too strong. Much of the film is told wordlessly in action, or through hearing one of their thoughts as they go about their day. |

| Notes : Released in November of 1932, the same year that the Academy awarded Disney a special Oscar for is creation or a nationwide phenomenon, Mickey Mouse, this was his fifth mouse short for United Artists. Disney left Columbia this very year as they were unwilling to raise production costs sor the series above $13,500 per short. After all, the country was in the depths of the Depression. Disney signed with UA and thus began, for poster collectors, the 'Golden Age' of Mickey Mouse posters. The UA posters are full colour and often stone litho, as is this one sheet. There were only twelve United Artist-Mickey Mouse cartoons made and thus their run lasted less than two years. These posters have always been scarce and are the ultimate in Disney posters. This beautiful poster has had only the most minimal fold line touch-up and mounted on paper. |

| Notes : 1991 re-release Japanese poster. Kurosawa's original idea for the movie he was to make was a film about a day in the life of a samurai, beginning with him rising from his bed and ending with him making some mistake that required him to kill himself to save face. Despite a good deal of research, he did not feel he had enough solid factual information to make the movie, but came across the above-mentioned anecdote about a village hiring samurai to protect them and decided to use that idea. Kurosawa wrote a complete dossier for each character with a speaking role. In it was details about what they wore, their favorite foods, their past history, their speaking habits, and every other detail he could think of about them. No other Japanese director had ever done this.

 |
| Notes : 1960's re-release poster for Orson Welles classic. Considered by many to be the best film ever made, this is the story of Charles Foster Kane. The film opens with a long shot of Xanadu - the private estate of one of the world's richest men. In the middle of the estate is a castle. We see, inside the castle, a dying man examining a winter scene within a crystal ball. As he drops it, it smashes, and one word is heard - 'Rosebud...' What follows are pieces of newsreel-like footage detailing how Kane amassed his fortune, and turning around full circle at the end. Love it or hate it, this is the Gold Standard by which all other films are judged.

In 1930's Austria, a young woman named Maria is failing miserably in her attempts to become a nun. When the Navy captain Georg Von Trapp writes to the convent asking for a governess that can handle his seven mischievous children, Maria is given the job. The Captain's wife is dead, and he is often away, and runs the household as strictly as he does the ships he sails on. The children are unhappy and resentful of the governesses that their father keeps hiring, and have managed to run each of them off one by one. When Maria arrives, she is initially met with the same hostility, but her kindness, understanding, and sense of fun soon draws them to her and brings some much-needed joy into all their lives -- including the Captain's. Eventually he and Maria find themselves falling in love, even though Georg is already engaged to a Baroness and Maria is still a postulant. The romance makes them both start questioning the decisions they have made... |

If only I were a Method player, huh? But the fact is, I didn't really believe in The Method. I believed in good casting. And I'm still not sure about Holly and me...' This was Audrey Hepburn's assessment of her performance in the role, many years later, of the outrageous Holly Golightly. When Grandduke Charles, the prince-regent of Carpatha, a fictitious Balkan country which could start a European war by switching alliances, visits London for the coronation of the new British king in 1911, and spends his one evening off at the Coconut Girl club, the reputed stickler for protocol is so charmed by a clumsy American understudy that he orders his British attaché to invite her to the embassy for a private supper. Being overlooked and understanding German, she learns of the repressive attitude of the regent and the plans of his reformist, pro-German minor son, king Nicholas, to take over power by surprise, but doesn't dodge and tries to reconcile father and son. The queen-dowager decides to make her lady-in-waiting for the coronation day, so she stays in the picture to everyone else's surprise. |

| Notes : VERY Rare Italian landscape 4 foglio, art by MAYO, stunning image of the screen goddess Marilyn Monroe. Monroe did not want to make this film but agreed after Fox promised her the lead in Billy Wilder's screen version of the Broadway hit, The Seven Year Itch. The film's storyboard is neither a 'true comedy' nor a 'true melodrama'. The fictitious family-the five Donahues- is depicted in both good time and bad times, a bittersweet mode of musical instead of an old-fashioned one. Marilyn Monroe's fictitious character, as the sixth 'name principal' having a long role in the film, is given a variety of interactions with the fictitious Donahues. She originally attempts to compete with the Donahues as her character climbs the vaudeville ladder on which they have already perched at the top rung, but later makes a very sincere effort to become part of their close-knit, supportive family traditions. The musical seems ahead of its time (in the heyday of MGM musicals) in the sense of a contrasting very forward-looking story format with its old-fashioned musical numbers representing a pastiche of well-known Irving Berlin songs from different eras.

In December of 1969, four months after Woodstock, the Rolling Stones and Jefferson Airplane gave a free concert in Northern California, east of Oakland at Altamont Speedway. About 300,000 people came, and the organizers put Hell's Angels in charge of security around the stage. Armed with pool cues and knifes, Angels spent the concert beating up spectators, killing at least one. The film intercuts performances, violence, Grace Slick and Mick Jagger's attempts to cool things down, close-ups of young listeners (dancing, drugged, or suffering Angel shock), and a look at the Stones later as they watch concert footage and reflect on what happened. |

Few directors are as revered and imitated as Federico Fellini, a true artist whose style of film-making mixed dreams and gritty reality with a touching sense of humanity. After struggling financially with his early films, La Dolce Vita broke all box office records and garnered world-wide acclaim, marking this as one of many Fellini masterpieces. Filmed mainly at the Cinecitta studios, we follow star Anita Ekberg and Marcello Mastroianni as they escape the paparazzi through the streets of Rome.

Ranking as one of the most iconic and memorable screen moments in all of cinema history, Marilyn Monroe stands over a subway grate, in her unforgettable white gown designed by Bill Travilla, and comments 'Isn't it delicious?' as the air lifts her skirt. Tom Ewell can only stand there and watch and dream, as does the star-struck audience. Billy Wilder shot this scene multiple times to get it right, with a growing New York crowd watching, and all involved knowing it would be the key scene of the film. Unfortunately Monroe's husband, Joe DiMaggio, was not happy with the very public gawking at his wife. To own this large format image of Monroe at the height of her fame, will be a real prize for any serious fan.(amxd) |

The world is astounded when Willy Wonka, for years a recluse in his factory, announces that five lucky people will be given a tour of the factory, shown all the secrets of his amazing candy, and one will win a lifetime supply of Wonka chocolate. Nobody wants the prize more than young Charlie, but as his family is so poor that buying even one bar of chocolate is a treat, buying enough bars to find one of the five golden tickets is unlikely in the extreme. But in movieland, magic can happen. Charlie, along with four somewhat odious other children, get the chance of a lifetime and a tour of the factory. Along the way, mild disasters befall each of the odious children, but can Charlie beat the odds and grab the brass ring?

He returned to his small town the previous Thursday, having been called back from a medical conference by his nurse, who was being flooded with patients. He arrives to find that most have canceled their appointments, but the few cases he does have all have the same story: someone close to them is acting strangely as if they had been replaced. Consulting some of his colleagues, he finds that these types of reports have been coming in all week and they conclude it must be some type of mass hysteria. However, when his friends Jack and Teddy Belicec show him a partly formed body they have uncovered in their home, he begins to realize that there may be some truth to the wild stories he has been hearing. |

| Notes : Jan Horak is a middle-aged railroad dispatcher stationed at a forsaken spot in the desert, within driving distance of the nearest town. A widower, he has saved his money and goes to town to buy a dog, meets Betty, a flashy blonde who gains his confidence and marries him for the purpose of acquiring his $7,000 'fortune.' Jan suffers a loss of hearing brought on by psychosomatic reasons, as it is explained later, but listening to Betty is more than enough to deafen any man. While he is incapacitated, Steve, is sent to substitute for him and Betty soon makes sure that the railroad job description is broadened to include her. 'Tain't long before Betty and Steve are plotting Jan's death and there isn't a postman in sight beyond plot swipes. As usual, in Hugh Haas films, fate, irony and eventful circumstances always come into play and this time it is the form of an automobile accident that knocks Jan down but does not injure him. But, as a result, Jan regains his hearing. He does not bother to inform Betty and Steve of this and is soon listening---good sportsmanship be hanged---to their conversations as they plot his death. Some more business happens before the end that wouldn't have happened if Jan had just stayed with his original mission and bought a dog from Bernard Gorcey back in the first reel. |

| Notes : On introducing James Bond in Dr. No, producers Broccoli & Saltzman could not have forseen the phenomenon that the series of films would soon become. But the material already had a certain glamour. Here was an anti-hero who was terribly British, who killed in cold blood and yet was able to charm numerous beautiful women and solve the deadliest of crimes, all in a day's work.
This adaptation from the novel by Ian Fleming was one of the films most faithful to the original story. James Bond is sent to Jamaica with a mission: to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of fellow agent John Strangways. The trail leads him to the isalnd of Crab Key, the base of the SPECTRE headquartersof corrupt scienstist Dr. No, whom Bond believes to be the murderer. Dr. No informs Bond of his aim of world domination and the destruction of the US space programme. Battle commences between Bond & Dr. No, until the villain finally falls ino his own trap and dies.
Mitchell Hooks painted the iconic image of Sean Connery as Bond, with a smoking pistol in one hand and a cigarette in the other. This image was used internationally at the time, as well as in later poster campaigns. The posters featured Bond surrounded by several glamorous women, a visual shorthand that was to make the secret agent immediately recognizable to cinema audiences worldwide. Joseph Caroff designed the 007 logo, which, with a few variations, has been used throughout the series. |

The original score was composed by Carter Burwell, a longtime collaborator of the Coen Brothers. The Big Lebowski failed domestically at the U.S. box office and received mixed reviews at the time of its release. Reviews have trended towards the positive over time, and the film has become a cult favorite, noted for its idiosyncratic characters, surrealistic dream sequences, unconventional dialogue, and eclectic soundtrack. Devoted fans in Louisville, Kentucky created the Lebowski Fest in 2002, a festival that has since expanded to several other cities. |

This fabulous poster, which many consider to be superior to any of the American paper, boasts graphics by French poster artist Boris Grinsson.
James Bond willingly falls into an assassination ploy involving a naive Russian beauty in order to retrieve a Soviet encryption device that was stolen by SPECTRE. |

| Notes : Some Like It Hot (United Artists, 1959). Half Sheet (22' X 28') Style A.
Marilyn Monroe shines as singer Sugar Kane in this gender-bending comedy. Ms. Monroe struts her stuff on this fun half sheet, keeping up the ruse of her fellow band mates, the cross dressing musicians Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. The duo tries to avoid the mob by hiding out in drag with Monroe's all-girl orchestra. Billy Wilder directs this highly lauded film, a top grossing comedy of its time that continues to be popular with film fans and poster collectors alike.
When two Chicago musicians, Joe and Jerry, witness the the St. Valentine's Day massacre, they want to get out of town and get away from the gangster responsible, Spats Colombo. They're desperate to get a gig out of town but the only job they know of is in an all-girl band heading to Florida. They show up at the train station as Josephine and Daphne, the replacement saxophone and bass players. They certainly enjoy being around the girls, especially Sugar Kane Kowalczyk who sings and plays the ukulele. Joe in particular sets out to woo her while Jerry/Daphne is wooed by a millionaire, Osgood Fielding III. Mayhem ensues as the two men try to keep their true identities hidden and Spats Colombo and his crew show up for a meeting with several other crime lords. |

| Notes : The first, and many would say best film from the Beatles, A Hard Day's Night was thrown together on a rush schedule at the height of Beatlemania. Shot in pseudo-documentary style, the film purports to show a typical day in the life of the group. A fantastic look at John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr doing what they do best, this film is always a hit with fans. The poster also capitalizes on the group's enormous cultural and style appeal, complete with their famous 'mop tops.' |

| Notes : Spooky film with a good premise. Three film students go into Maryland woodland to make a film about a local urban legend... The Blair Witch, whereupon they disappear. One year later, the students film and video are found in the woods. Such was the internet publicity at the time of release that some believed the story to be true. It remains an important and influential horror movie and the POSTER is instantly recognisable.
Three film students go missing after traveling into the woods of Maryland to make a documentary about the local Blair Witch legend leaving only their footage behind. |
