Regarded as one of the greatest science fiction films ever made, Robert Wise's classic set the bar for all other entries in the genre. A former editor for Orson Welles, Wise brilliantly instilled within the film a political subtext that reflected the anxieties of post-WWII America. Klaatu (Michael Rennie), a soft-spoken interplanetary traveler, brings forth a message of peace or destruction for Earthlings. The destruction part is personified by his robot bodyguard Gort, who can (and does) emit death rays when threatened. An alien and his bodyguard land on earth to deliver a very important message to leaders around the world, which could determine the earth's survival.
